Ever since I was a young girl who spent a lot of time in hospital, books have been my solace, my passion, my lifeline back to myself and my connection to the outside world. When I was nine, I asked my sister for a delicious hardback edition of George Eliot's The Mill on the Floss for Christmas. I had spied the leather-bound tome in our local newsagent (spoiler alert: it wasn't leather), and my sister managed to pull off a Christmas miracle to secure the funds (aka mum's wallet) where she bought the book that still sits on one of my bookshelves. I was a dyed-in-the-wool bibliophile before I read Eliot's epic, but this is such a wonderfully pervasive memory for me.

I'm not sure I fully understood the context of what I was reading, but I turned every page with a sense of wonder; as though something remarkable was happening. Why? Because something remarkable happened every time I read a book, as I was thrown between worlds and teleported through time to places that filled me with both terror and delight.

Bibliomaniac is an independent publication and your subscription makes this site possible, allowing Bibliomaniac to continue to exist. You rock 🤘🏼

Why is there a paywall?

While most newsletters are mostly free to create and share, the Ghost platform is one I've chosen to pay for due to the state of my moral compass. By signing up, you'll have access to the full archive, and everything that's still to come. Think of it as your own private library with me perched on your shoulder, like a hedonistic book fairy.

What's behind the paywall?

By becoming a paid subscriber, you will receive:

  1. access to all published content
  2. an email when new content is published
  3. the opportunity to share your thoughts and hopefully connect with other curious readers and kindred spirits.

Warm wishes and happy reading,

Carly :)
